Unais Gomes - The TelegraphA British man has been killed in a ‘brawl’ after drinking a hallucinogenic drink called ‘ayahuasca’.
Police accused a Canadian of killing the young man after they both drank the psychedelic substance at a Spiritual retreat in the Peruvian Amazon.
According to Reuters, U.K. citizen, Unais Gomes, 26, attacked Joshua Andrew Freeman Stevens, 29, with a knife in a drug-fuelled rampage. Stevens fought back, and allegedly killed Gomes in self-defence, stabbing him in the stomach and chest with the same knife.
en.wikipedia.orgStevens was arrested but has since been released by police. In an interview with CBS, he said: “The police have released me because [there] were too many [witnesses] that had seen it as self-defence.”
He added that he was becoming good friends with Gomes and the pair spoke every day. He described himself as still in shock over the attack but felt no ill will towards his friend, saying: “May god bless Unais, his family and friends and my friends and family … This will all make sense one day.”
Ayahuasca is known for its psychedelic properties and is made by combining two different plants, the ayahuasca vine and the chacruna, a kind of shrub. The active ingredient is called dimethyltryptamine (DMT) and has been known to help people manage depression and is rarely associated with violence.
