After a number of inevitable pre-E3 leaks, Bungie has come out and officially announced Rise of Iron, the next expansion of Destiny.

During a livestream event, Bungie confirmed the existence of the expansion, and that it’d be exclusive to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions of the game – all previous expansions were also available on PS3 and Xbox 360.

Bungie CEO Pete Parsons said in a statement:

Rise of Iron is an exciting addition to the Destiny universe. We are continually blown away and inspired by the growing Destiny community’s energy and enthusiasm.

Rise of Iron will launch  September 20, priced at $30 (about £20). As you might expect, it does require the Destiny base game. It’ll also require The Dark Below, House of Wolves, and The Taken King expansions, so if you haven’t got them yet, now would be a good time.

The expansion will include entirely new areas, such as The Plaguelands and Felwinter Peak (both outstanding names for a metal band).

We’ll also get to enjoy new raids, events, patrols, weapons, and updated strikes, while more Crucible maps and features are also set to be added in for the multiplayer fans. There’ll be some shiny new CG and in-game cinematics too.

Rise of Iron will also get you a new “significant” Light level increase  and a “mutated” enemy faction of the already pretty terrifying Fallen.

The official description for the expansion’s story:

Guardians must rise to the challenge to take their place as the next generation of Iron Lords. Along the way they will join forces with a legend from humanity’s Golden Age to defeat a plague of unstoppable evil once and for all.

Fan-favourite weapon Gjallarhorn is also set to make a comeback for the expansion. Everyone can get it by completing a certain mission, or you can stand out from (most of) the crowd by pre-ordering and getting a sexy black and silver version.

Bungie finished off the livestream by teasing that we might just learn a little more about Rise of Iron at E3 – provided nothing else leaks out beforehand, that is.
