Whoopi Goldberg said it best when she echoed the thoughts of many Prince fans: “This is what it sounds like when doves cry.”
The music legend and inspiration died Thursday at his home in Minnesota at the age of 57, leaving fans everywhere shocked and saddened.
The ‘Purple Rain’ singer was well known for his four-decade long music career.
Tributes began pouring in from across the globe soon after news of his death was confirmed, with industry leaders taking to social media to mourn the death of one of the most influential musicians in history.
Lenny Kravitz said he was ‘heartbroken’ by the news. The singer described Prince as his ‘musical brother’, adding: “My friend… The one who showed me the possibilities within myself, changed everything, and kept his integrity until the end, is gone. I am heartbroken.”
Justin Timberlake, a lifelong fan of Prince, said he was ‘numb’ and ‘stunned’ by the news. He posted to Instagram: “It would be silly to say that he has inspired our music… It’s beyond that. He’s somewhere within every song I’ve ever written. I am sad, but I will smile when I think of every second that I had the fortune of being in his company. We have lost our greatest living musician.”
They were far from the only people to publicly mourn the death of the global superstar.
Here is a roundup of just some of the hundreds of tributes from musicians and actors across the globe:
