A man who was hiking across America barefoot to ‘save the earth’ was struck by a Buick SUV and died on Saturday.
Mark Baumer began his shoeless trek in October to raise awareness and funds for the FANG Collective, a non-profit organisation that protests the natural gas industry.
He was supposed to end up in California by May and hoped to raise at least $10,000 (£8,000) according to his YouCaring page.
Florida Highway Patrol confirmed Baumer was hit on the side of Highway 90 in Walton County, Florida, WTVQ reports. He was pronounced dead on the scene during the 101st day of his trip.
The 33-year-old wrote blog posts and poems on his website for his journey titled ‘notgoingtomakeit.com.’
His final blog post shows a chilling photo showing a yellow arrow and text reading ‘killed’ on a road.

FANG confirmed Baumer’s death in a Facebook post yesterday and asked the public to honour his memory by reading the blog posts and poems he produced during his barefoot trek across the U.S.
The organisation said in a statement on Sunday: “We are shocked and devastated to learn about the passing of our friend Mark Baumer. We will work to commemorate and honour Mark’s life in the best way that we can.”
As of Monday, the ‘Crossing America Barefoot to Save Earth from Climate Change’ campaign had raised more than $14,400, exceeding its goal by more than $4,000.
