With Leo grabbing an overdue ‘Best Actor’ Oscar, people may have been briefly distracted from the fact that everyone thought the 2016 Oscars were a disgrace, as far as diversity goes.
Thankfully, and unsurprisingly, host Chris Rock was on hand with a hilarious reminder that the Academy (and Hollywood in general) is grossly out of touch.
Along with Leslie Jones, Whoopi Goldberg, and Tracey Morgan, Rock presented some of his favourite ‘deleted scenes’ from some of 2016’s biggest blockbusters – and it’s something to behold.
The Academy/TwitterFirst up was Goldberg making a cameo appearance alongside Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper in Joy.
She says:
One day they will make a movie about a skinny white lady who invented a mop.
Whilst a black girl would have to invent a cure for cancer, before they even gave her a TV movie.
But hey I’m not mad – cos I know how to play the game – Joy.
The Academy/TwitterThen, Leslie Jones replaced the bear who starred alongside Leo in The Revenant.
“There are no black actresses in this movie!” screams the Saturday Night Live star, before berating the mauled Oscar winner – we can finally say that – for not returning her calls.
The Academy/TwitterThe Danish Girl was given a very different feel as Tracey Morgan took on the task of filling Eddie Redmayne’s shoes.
Morgan greets Best Supporting Actress, Alicia Vikander, by saying “I’m a Danish Girl. These Danishes are good girl!”
Powerful stuff.
The Academy/TwitterLast, but by no means least, Rock replaced Matt Damon as the star in The Martian.
He battles to convince Jeff Daniels and Kristen Wiig that it’s worth spending 2,500 ‘white dollars’ to bring a black astronaut home.
Rock’s opening speech on diversity was the real highlight however:

As reported by The Sun, he said during the show:
The real question everyone wants to know is, ‘Is Hollywood racist?’ You gotta go at that at the right way. Is it burning cross racist? it’s a different type of racist.
You’re damn right Hollywood’s racist, but it’s the racist we’ve become accustomed to.
Things are changing. We got a black Rocky this year and that’s an unbelievable statement because Rocky takes place in a world where white athletes are as good as black athletes.
So Rocky’s a science fiction movie. There are things that happen in Star Wars that are more believable than Rocky.
