GettyThe director of the CIA John Brennan has claimed that the the classified ’28 pages’, which supposedly detail Saudi Arabian involvement in 9/11, should be published so they can exonerate the Saudi government.
The 28 pages, which were withheld from the public when the 2002 report into the terror attacks was published, are part of a dispute over whether America can sue the Saudi Arabian government for alleged involvement in the attack, The Independent reports.
Saudi Arabia has denied providing any support to the 19 hijackers who killed almost 3,000 people in the horrific attacks and claims it’ll seize up to $750 billion (£526 billion) worth of American assets if the pages are released.
GettyBut Mr Brennan, told the Saudi-owned Arabiya TV that he believes the papers should be released so that the Saudis can be proven innocent.
He said:
I think the 28 pages will be published and I support their publication and everyone will see the evidence that the Saudi government had nothing to do with it. According to the results of the report, that there was no link between the Saudi government as a state or as an institution or even senior Saudi officials to the September 11 attacks.
The Office of the U.S. Director of National Intelligence is currently reviewing the pages to see if they can be declassified.
GettyWhile the former U.S. Senator Bob Graham, who co-chaired the congressional inquiry into the attacks, has said that the White House will most likely make a decision on releasing the papers this month.
Mr Graham told ABC News:
The 28 pages primarily relate to who financed 9/11 and they point a very strong finger at Saudi Arabia as being the principal financier.
The position of the United States government has been to protect Saudi Arabia.
At virtually every step of the judicial process, when the United States government was called upon to take a position, it has been a position adverse to the interests of United States citizens seeking justice and protective of the government which, in my judgement, was the most responsible for that network of support.
WikimediaGraham, a former democrat, has joined forces with Republican Walter Jones and Democrat Stephen Lynch along with families of those killed in the attack to campaign for the papers release, introducing legislation to force President Obama to publish the 28 pages.
If the papers prove a solid enough link between the Saudi Kingdom and the attackers it may be possible for families of victims to sue the country through U.S. courts.
