Ice Cube has revealed that Dr Dre is set to release his first solo album in nearly 16 years ahead of the release of the Straight Outta Compton biopic.

Dre’s long-time friend and former member of N.W.A let slip that the album is coming in a recent interview with Philadelphia hip-hop station Power 99, and the news that it could be dropping as soon as this weekend (August 1) is even more tantalising.

The record will reportedly tie in with the forthcoming N.W.A film, which is set to open in cinemas August 14 to large audiences.

In the interview, Ice Cube said:

Dre is dropping an album inspired by the Compton movie. He’s dropping something on August 1.

It’s mega, it’s Dr Dre, it’s what everybody’s been waiting for. It’s definitely a dope record and he’s dropping it all on the same day.

According to Rolling Stone, the album will form the soundtrack for the much-anticipated film and will feature Kendrick Lamar and Eminem.

The idea of Detox dropping has got every hip-hop fan talking, but after he reportedly scrapped the project in 2014, the chances of the confirmed record actually being Detox are pretty slim.

Detox has been in the works since 2001, and was announced two years after he dropped ‘2001’, his second studio album in 1999. Confusing, I know. However, the now infamous third and final studio album has been nothing but a myth for long over a decade, and Dr Dre fans have continuously been let down – so much so, that Dre had to announce that he had shelved the project last year.

But now the big man is a billionaire, the hope in that he may have found some time to finally finish it is still strong – and with the release of Straight Outta Compton on the horizon, now seems like the perfect time to drop it.

Still, even if it isn’t Detox, an official solo project is still mouth-watering enough.
