The husband and wife from Liaoning, China had to piece together 140,000 yuan (£15,000) when they discovered the man’s 85 year-old father had shredded the money, reports Mashable.

The husband, Chen, told local television network Qianshan Evening News his father became paranoid after he sold his house in Anshan for 200,000 yuan (£21,461) last October.

The father, fearing his son and daughter-in-law were after his money, cut up more than three quarters of what he’d been paid for the house.

Chen had asked his father to put the cash in a bank to keep it safe, but his father’s unexpected reaction to the suggestion left him and his wife doing what is probably the world’s worst jigsaw puzzle.

The couple displayed an incredible amount of patience rebuilding the notes. It reportedly took 17 hours of work a day, and three months to put the notes back together again.

Thankfully, Chen’s father didn’t destroy all the money and left 60,000 (£6,500) yuan intact. The couple has since managed to exchange the bank notes for new notes, and deposited all 200,000 yuan in the bank.
