The writers behind Deadpool have said the X-Force movie will come before Deadpool 3

Other than the recently released, child-friendly version of Deadpool 2, titled Once Upon A Deadpool, viewers haven’t really heard anything from the funny, foul-mouthed superhero since May last year (2018), when the sequel was released.

Leading man Ryan Reynolds confirmed last year there’d be another film in the franchise, though he didn’t give anything away in terms of a possible release date.

The actor appeared on Lorraine shortly before the release of Deadpool 2, where he was asked if there would be a third movie.

He responded:

Yes, we have the suit. I badger Hugh Jackman weekly to put the claws back on.

While a Wolverine cameo might be something of a pipe dream, writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick explained to Screen Rant, Deadpool 3 should be going ahead, but X-Force will happen before it.

They revelaed:

According to the chronology that we’ve established, X-Force will be next, before Deadpool 3. It’s a bit of the “Iron Man 1, Iron Man 2, The Avengers, Iron Man 3” model, in that sense.

X-Force isn’t being written by us. It’s being written and directed by Drew Goddard, or at least that’s the plan right now. We’re not involved with that one.

We do anticipate there will be a Deadpool 3 at some point, but it’s just a little premature, because it will definitely take a backseat to X-Force for the time being.

According to Digital Spy, X-Force has been in development at 20th Century Fox since as far back as 2013, and as you might have been able to guess from the title, it’s an X-Men spin off.

X-Force is made up of a group of mutants who differ from the X-Men in that they tend to opt for more violent and underhand methods in order to get things done.

We met some members of the X-Force in Deadpool 2, when the Merc-with-a-mouth assembled his quirky team to challenge Cable, the traveling cyborg.

In the sequel, the X-Force included the ever-lucky Domino, played by Zazie Beetz, as well as Terry Crews as Bedlam, Lewis Tan as Shatterstar, Bill Skarsgård as Zeitgeist, Brad Pitt as the invisible Vanisher, and Rob Delaney playing the ordinary but very well-moustached Peter.

Of course, you may also remember many of these characters were met with a quick and definitely painful death after a skydive, so it’s quite unlikely they’ll all be making a comeback.

As for Deadpool’s own film, the writers added:

We’re constantly in touch with Ryan. So it’s always at the front of our minds. We’ll get [to Deadpool 3] when the time is right, but as of right now, X-Force is next up.

I’m sure both films will be worth the wait!
