A piece of debris that floated ashore a western Indian Ocean island has been confirmed to be from a Boeing 777 wing.

Air safety investigators have said that the piece that washed up on the island of Reunion is a ‘flaperon’, fuelling speculation that it might be from missing Malaysia Airlines flight MH370.

If it is, it would be the first piece of the plane to be found since it vanished off radar last year. It would also confirm what is commonly believed, that the doomed flight crashed into the Indian Ocean.

A huge search for the missing flight from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing was undertaken, but so far investigators have had no luck.

A Malaysian team is on its way to check out the debris, and they’re hoping this will finally shed some light on the situation. It’s been especially difficult for the friends and families of the victims, as so far they’ve been left in limbo over what happened to their loved ones that day.

The Malaysian Prime Minister has released a statement, saying:

We have had many false alarms before, but for the sake of the families who have lost loved ones, and suffered such heartbreaking uncertainty, I pray that we will find out the truth so that they may have closure and peace.

I promise the families of those lost that whatever happens, we will not give up.

Hopefully this latest discovery will finally bring some closure for them.
