Singer Demi Lovato has spoken out for the first time since she was admitted to hospital with a suspected overdose.

25-year-old Demi has openly struggled with addiction and eating disorders since she was a teenager, but after being sober for six years, the former Disney star was admitted to hospital last month to be treated for a suspected drug overdose.

The singer recently released a song called ‘Sober’, which indicated she was struggling again after years of avoiding substance abuse.

The song lyrics read:

Momma, I’m so sorry, I’m not sober anymore

And daddy, please forgive me for the drinks spilled on the floor

To the ones who never left me, we’ve been down this road before

I’m so sorry, I’m not sober anymore

The song was released towards the end of June, only a few days after she had cancelled a concert at London’s O2 arena just hours before she was due to go on stage.

According to ET, the American star has been pushing away the people closest to her recently.

A source said:

Demi has a long history with drug and alcohol abuse. It was never ‘just once’ for Demi. She has a lot of demons. She’s been struggling for a long time.

Slowly people she cared about started to drift away from her. She pushed away people who actually had her best interest in mind.

She’s just not in a good place.

Following Demi’s admission to hospital, a statement was released about her situation.

It said:

Demi is awake and with her family who want to express thanks to everyone for the love, prayers and support.

Almost two weeks later, Demi has spoken out herself.

She posted to Instagram yesterday (August 5), explaining that her battle with sobriety was an ongoing challenge.

The star wrote:

I have always been transparent about my journey with addiction. What I’ve learned is that this illness is not something that disappears or fades with time.

It is something I must continue to overcome and have not done yet.

Demi went on to thank her friends, family, fans and staff at Cedars-Sinai – the hospital in California where the singer was treated.

She admits:

Without them I wouldn’t be here writing this letter to all of you.

Demi continued:

I now need time to heal and focus on on my sobriety and road to recovery.

I will keep fighting.

Demi’s fans have been quick to support her.
