LucasFilm/DisneyThe incredible success of Star Wars: The Force Awakens has led to Disney reportedly planning a further ten films.
The epic space opera already has a further five movies planned for release, with both Episodes VIII and IX, plus a hat-trick of spin-offs already on the books, but now top Disney executives are rumoured to be discussing another five films for after 2020, the Mirror reports.
A source reportedly told the Mirror:
The success of The Force Awakens has given executives much to think about. So many characters’ back-stories and futures can now be brought to life. When these ideas came from George Lucas 40 years ago, technology was lagging behind. Now they can be turned around in a year.
LucasFilm/DisneyThe Force Awakens director J.J. Abrams – who won’t be back for the upcoming eighth movie, with Rian Johnson directing that one instead – has already admitted there are some ‘exciting’ times ahead for fans of the franchise.
Speaking to The Sun, he said:
There are some really cool things being discussed. It is very exciting to see how it is being put together.
Currently, the Star Wars spin-off movies will star Han Solo and Boba Fett but the film makers have a whole wealth of characters to choose from, and it’s expected that one will be made about Jedi Master, Obi-Wan Kenobi, who was played by Sir Alec Guinness and Ewan McGregor in previous movies.
LucasFilm/DisneyAllegedly, McGregor was in talks with Disney last year about a possible trilogy of films based on the legendary Jedi Master.
Surprisingly, the spin-offs may also focus on some of the less popular prequel characters like Mace Windu, played by Samuel L. Jackson, and director A.J. Edwards admitted he was in talks to helm a Star Wars movie based on the Master of the Order.
When asked by a fan on Reddit about the rumours he’ll be directing a future film in the franchise, Edwards wrote: ‘Talking about it, not able to say a lot yet,’ and added: ‘It will focus on Mace Windu.’
LucasFilm/DisneyThe next two movies in the trilogy are expected to be released in 2017 and 2019, while both the Han Solo and Boba Fett movies are out in 2018 and 2020.
Spin-off Rogue One: A Star Wars Story starring Forest Whitaker , Felicity Jones and Mads Mikkelsen is due to be released in December 2016.
Thankfully, there’s no sign of a Jar Jar spin off on the horizon…
