Have you ever, for some weird reason, poked your finger into your belly button and felt a strange, tingling sensation?

Well whether you choose admit it or not, it supposedly causes a sensation that makes you feel as though you need a wee.

But why? Well, a doctor has answered this all-important question, so now you can know the truth.

Dr. Christopher Hollingsworth of NYC Surgical Associates told BuzzFeed:

At the navel, you have the ability to stimulate not only the skin overlying the navel, but also the fibers of the inner lining of your abdomen.

When you dig inside your belly button, you stimulate abdominal tissue that’s near the part of your spine that tells your brain you have to pee.

So, as you stick your finger into your belly button, it sends a signal from the deeper fibres that line your inner abdominal cavity to your spinal cord. Because your spinal cord at that level is also relaying signals from your bladder and urethra, it feels almost the same.

He also said you will notice if you ‘push anywhere around the belly button’, you won’t get that same sensation because you aren’t ‘hitting the deeper fibres behind the muscle layer’.

Adding:

The internal lining of the abdominal cavity at your umbilicus (belly button) is called your parietal peritoneum.

This structure is exquisitely sensitive and its sensory nerve fibres relay input back to the spinal cord at the same level as the nerves that relay sensation from your bladder and urethra.

So there you go, fact of the day for you.
