This picture of an ‘800-year-old mobile phone’ is somehow sending conspiracy theorists into overdrive.

The supposed archaeological find, which you have to admit, looks quite a lot like a standard 1990s mobile phone, has gone viral and is now the source of much debate online. The ‘keys’ on the ‘phone’ allegedly look like they are written cuneiform – an early system of writing used by the ancient Sumerians of Mesopotamia (now Iraq) around 3000 BCE (Before the Common Era).

YouTube channel Paranormal Crucible reported: “What is it? Is it evidence of an advanced civilisation or time travel?” Probably not. Editorial on the channel goes on to say: “Cuneiform tablets aren’t unusual – an estimated two million have been excavated.

The device was allegedly uncovered during a dig at at Fuschl am See, (in Salzburg), Austria and conspiracy website tothedeathmedia.com said:

What a device like this with Cuneiform writing is doing in Austria is something that no one is able to fully understand or explain. Regrettably the information about this ‘sensational’ discovery is limited. We cannot explain what it is, whether it is real or not, but it has caught our attention and we would love to know more about it.

Even they’re not sure and all the details repeat from a post on Flickr dating back to January 2012. The resurfacing of the image nearly four years on seems to pin it down as an imaginative hoax.

Has anyone tried ringing it?
