Since Donald Trump took up residency in The Oval Office sales for guns have had a negative impact, which is quite ironic as he and The Republican party are strong advocates for gun ownership.
The first few months into his presidency is off to a fantastic start isn’t it? He’s had his purposed travel ban blocked twice, a proposal to repeal the Affordable Healthcare Act (or ‘Obamacare’ as it’s more commonly known as) rejected, his approval rating is at an all-time low and he just can’t seem to shake off those Russia-Putin allegations.
The drop in sales for weapons couldn’t be more of a backfire for Trump’s team. Particularly as it rose to an all-time high during the Obama Administration – this was partly due to the fact that gun-loving right-wing conservatives were scared that the former president was going to takeaway their boomsticks.
Speaking to Faux Fox News, Karl Sorken, a production manager at Battle Rifle Co. in Houston the claimed that:
President Obama was the best gun salesman the world has ever seen.
However despite sales dropping, thanks to Trump the country has seen an unprecedented rise in guns being bought by black and LGBT customers. According to The Washington Post, gun clubs and shops who cater for black and LGBT clients say there has been an ‘uptick’ in sales in the aftermath of last November’s elections.
With Trump in charge, and the backing of the National Rifle Association, fewer customers are buying guns. Most gun stores overstocked on product due to the fact that most of them assumed that Hillary Clinton would win the race to The White House and that her administration would’ve pushed for even harsher gun laws.
Unsurprisingly it seems that with Trump in office groups and communities ‘ostracised’ by his supporters are wary of the nation’s current direction and feel the need to protect themselves.
After all this was a guy who bragged during The Republican caucus that:
I could stand in the middle of Fifth Avenue and shoot somebody and I wouldn’t lose any voters.
Philip Smith, president of the National African American Gun Association, has attributed Trump being the:
… reason, and rhetoric from other groups that have been on the fringe. It’s like being racist is cool now.
Getty UKHe went on the say that more than 70,000 members have been added to the group since election day, with new chapters being setup all over the US.
Since Trump’s election last year it’s been reported that hate crime in the United States has risen by 20%, despite his administration ‘more forcefully denouncing’ various hate related incidents as of late there have been no signs of a decrease.
