Donald Trump’s outlandish policy proposals have garnered a massive response online, but they haven’t quite broken the internet. So he is implementing plan b, get the web shut down.
Trump believes that as the internet can be used to radicalise people, including children, we should really consider some form of online censorship.
Speaking at the same event where he suggested Muslims should be banned from entering US borders, he said:
We’re losing a lot of people because of the internet…We have to see Bill Gates and a lot of different people that really understand what’s happening.
We have to talk to them about, maybe in certain areas, closing that internet up in some ways. Somebody will say, ‘Oh freedom of speech, freedom of speech.’ These are foolish people.”
He added:
But People are fed up – they are fed up with incompetence, they are fed up with stupid leaders, they are fed up with stupid people.”
A wall to keep out Mexicans, a blanket ban on Muslims entering the country, and widespread censorship. Come on Donald, with ideas like that you are hardly the solution to incompetence or stupidity in office.
Some minor credit where it is due, Trump has identified a major issue in that radicalisation is all too possible online. But when you start demanding the freedoms of innocent civilians are altered to such an extreme degree due to terror, well then terror has already beaten you.
