We got through 2017 by the skin of our teeth, but the evil forces that be have doubled down their efforts to end the world in 2018.
And it seems they’re succeeding in their nefarious goal, as the Doomsday Clock has just been turned to two minutes to midnight.
The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists have advanced the clock one notch closer after a ‘grim assessment’ of the state of geopolitical affairs, according to The Washington Post.
It’s hard to argue with their assessment to be quite honest, and I’m willing to bet we’ve all felt that existential dread of universal apocalypse in recent months.
The group of scientists have cited the growing tensions between the United States and North Korea, who have been engaging in an incendiary war of the words over the DPRK’s nuclear programme.
If you’re a bit confused about what the doomsday clock is, it’s quite simply a clock which indicates how close the world is to total annihilation, so yeah.

Beatrice Fihn, Executive Director of the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons, said this:
The actions and policies of the nuclear-armed states are winding the Doomsday Clock towards midnight. We have been lucky to avoid conflict through intentional or accidental means, but recent posturing and the false alarms in Hawaii and Japan show our luck is about to run out if we don’t move quickly.
A security based on luck is reckless and foolish; it’s exactly what the nuclear states have now. 122 nations voted for the nuclear ban Treaty and other nations need to join the process so we can stop flirting with our own destruction and destroy the Doomsday Clock once and for all.
The scientists said there wasn’t one single event which brought the clock forward, but a range of factors including climate change and new technology. The clock has been moved 30 seconds closer to the hour of total doom.
The group who analyse the current situation include 15 Nobel Laureates, and claim:
The world is not only more dangerous now than it was a year ago; it is as threatening as it has been since World War II.
In fact, the Doomsday Clock is as close to midnight today as it was in 1953, when Cold War fears perhaps reached their highest levels.
To call the world nuclear situation dire is to understate the danger — and its immediacy.
North Korea’s nuclear weapons program appeared to make remarkable progress in 2017, increasing risks for itself, other countries in the region and the United States.
The symbolic clock has never wavered below 17 minutes to midnight since its inception in 1947, but it has rarely reached the two-minute level.
