Almost 40 people have been killed after two suicide bombs went off in the Afghan capital of Kabul this afternoon.

The attack, which has been claimed by the Afghan Taliban, began when a suicide bomber blew himself up near Afghanistan’s main parliament building.

The first blast was shortly followed by a car bomber in what is believed to be a combined attack, reports Al Jazeera.

In the recent past, Kabul has been relatively peaceful compared with the likes of neighbouring Iran, Iraq, and Syria.

Apparently the blast was so powerful that it literally tore through surrounding houses killing dozens of civilians and injuring many, many more.

As of yet the death toll stands at 38 while the number of injured is way over 80.

In the immediate aftermath of the attack, the Taliban claimed they were behind it, attacking a minibus carrying staff from Afghanistan’s main intelligence agency.

The Afghan parliament has repeatedly tried, and failed, to negotiate with the Taliban – however just last week the parliament welcomed a U.S. proposal of sending over 300 U.S. Marines to Helmand.

Harrowingly, the Taliban said that they welcomed the new ‘challenge’.
