New bodycam footage shows the moment two brave police officers in Nottinghamshire were faced with an attacker who ran at them brandishing an eight-inch kitchen knife.

Constables Alex Prentice and Debbie Wishart had been called out to a property in Corby when they were confronted by knifeman Lee Vickers.

Despite the two officers shouting at Vickers to put down the weapon, he charged at them. The entire confrontation was captured on a camera mounted on PC Prentice’s uniform.

The pair were responding to a call about a domestic incident last March and as they approached the property they found Vickers at the front door holding the large blade.

Despite the man’s attempted attack, PC Wishart eventually managed to distract Vickers before PC Prentice, using his police baton, managed to restrain and disarm him.

Vickers was arrested for possession of an offensive weapon and attempted assault, and later jailed for three-and-a-half years.

Speaking to BBC Crimewatch, PC Prentice said:

It is not the first time we have had to deal with an incident like this but it is the first time I have been hit on the stab vest. If the knife had been two to three inches higher it would have caught me in the neck.

It’s not something we come across every day. Even though you prepare for these situations, they are still difficult to deal with.

The two officers received a Chief Constable’s Commendation and The Boatman Shield at the police awards in May.

A statement by the Northamptonshire Police said:

They both demonstrated courage, cool resilience and outstanding professionalism in the face of extreme danger.

You can say that again!
