Keen viewers of Making a Murderer have spotted what many believe could be extremely important new evidence.

Viewers of the series will know that one of most important pieces of evidence in the case was the discovery of the victim Teresa Halbach’s car key in Steven Avery’s house.

The key on a distinctive blue lanyard not only helps place Halbach in Avery’s trailer but, crucially, it also contains his DNA with no other traces from anyone else.

However, eagle-eyed viewers have pointed out that in this photograph of Teresa Halbach (shown many times in the documentary) you can make out multiple keys, not just one in her closed hand.

According to Bustle, the find could have boosted Avery’s defence team’s argument that the key recovered by police was not Halbach’s main set. In turn, that could have helped them to argue it was planted in order to frame Avery.

Speaking to Rolling Stone, lawyer Jerry Buting said:

Dean [Strang] and I [are] only two minds. What I’m discovering is that a million minds are better than two.  Some of these people online have found things with a screen shot of a picture that we missed.

Buting said he and his partner did point out during the trial that having a single key would be very unusual.

The second look at the photograph, though, could be a game-changer:

We did challenge that. Why is she walking around with one key? But I don’t think I caught the fact that there was a photograph showing what she really carried around with her is a bunch of keys.

According to Buting, this evidence could still be submitted. If Avery’s application for an appeal does move forward, evidence found by the public could make it in front of a jury.
