Ed Sheeran has revealed why he doesn’t own a phone to James Corden.

In an edition of Carpool Karaoke, the singer-songwriter took time out of singing his own songs with Corden to soberly reveal why he decided to ditch his phone and all the contacts on there.

He said:

Just emails. Emails is the best way for me. You should definitely do it. I had a phone in my life for like two weeks but I just didn’t charge it.

He continued, explaining that it has no real impact on him given that people used to get by fine without them just a few decades ago.

He said:

It’s just like what it would’ve been like thirty years ago.

I’d wake up on a morning and there’d be like fifty messages and none of them would say ‘Hey, how are you?’ it’d be like ‘Can I have this?’, ‘Can you lend me this?’ and it was fine at the beginning it just got really draining by the end of it.

So getting rid of that, going travelling, getting perspective, making an album that I love… everything’s great.

Ed recently dismissed rumours that he had popped the question to his girlfriend, Cherry Seaborn, after Russell Crowe of all people had implied so.

He told an interviewer in Brazil:

You know, he’s only met Cherry once and I didn’t introduce her. I didn’t say anything. I think he just assumed. But no, we’re not engaged.

Russell’s gaffe didn’t break the two friends apart. In fact, the Aussie actor even emailed Sheeran to apologise for the confusion.

A phone call might have been better, though.
