This is the terrifying moment a building collapsed on a busy shopping street destroying several market stalls in the process.
The disastrous scenes were recorded by an onlooker in the town of Bhanpura, in Mandsaur District, located in Central India’s Madhya Pradesh State.
In the video, a stall-front can be seen on a busy street when the building behind the shop suddenly begins collapsing, also destroying the stalls in front of it.
A crowd appear to cheer as the building collapses in a cloud of dust, which also comes billowing out of the destroyed stalls.
Miraculously, local media reported at the time of the collapse that there were no injuries in the incident and police sources confirmed that the building had been evacuated before its collapse.
A police spokesman said:
We are dismantling the whole building now to avoid future accidents.
As of yet is not known what caused the building to collapse.
The incident comes after a 25-year-old woman was killed when a building partially collapsed in the nearby town of Bhiwandi on the same day.
There has been recent a spate of collapsed buildings across in the India, with nine killed in a similar incident in Greater Noida earlier this week.
Earlier this year a bridge which was under construction on a college campus in Florida collapsed resulting in several fatalities.
The tragic incident, which took place on March 15, killed six people and injured a further nine.
The bridge had been built in order to connect the Florida International University campus with a Miami suburb. Students had requested its construction in order to avoid the busy traffic.
Florida International University officials later confirmed that a student was killed during the incident.
It had been believed the bridge would last for a century, with the strength to withstand hurricanes. The 174 foot long structure was part of a project which cost nearly $20 million.
An ‘accelerated’ means of construction was intended to cut risks to both workers and pedestrians while minimising traffic disruption. A student died while crossing the busy road back in August 2017.
The university released the following statement in response to the tragedy:
We are shocked and saddened about the tragic events unfolding at the FIU-Sweetwater pedestrian bridge.
At this time we are still involved in rescue efforts and gathering information. We are working closely with authorities and first responders on the scene.
We will share updates as we have them.
Director of the Miami-Dade Police Department, Juan Perez, made the following statement at a press conference:
This is a tragedy we don’t want to re-occur anywhere in the U.S.
Right now we just want to find out what occurred, what caused this collapse to occur and people to die.
