A top NATO chief has warned the Russian Army could invade Europe in ’48 hours’ if they wanted as NATO has no defence plans in place.

General Sir Richard Barrons, the former chief of Joint Forces Command, claimed Russia could deploy its troops, warplanes and ships in just two days while Europe would take months to form an effective counter attack.

Barrons who has warned that the UK army is woefully unprepared for a war in Russia, has blamed France, Germany and Italy for not taking the threat of Russian aggression seriously, The Independent reports.

A number of Baltic states have become concerned over the threat that Russia poses to them and are concerned that their defence isn’t a priority for NATO.

They believe that mainland Europe has been distracted by immigration and the threat of international terrorism.

Speaking to The Telegraph Sir Barrons explained:

If you list all the military capability that Nato has, it has a lot more than Russia, but because most of it exists in this semi-dormant state there is a window of opportunity where . . . Russia could use its smaller forces to tweak Nato in a way to which Nato would be very pressed to respond because it doesn’t have any plans to do that.

A recent proposal to base 1,000 troops in the Baltic states and Poland was criticised for lacking military backing should Moscow choose to invade.

Sir Barrons claimed the 1,000 troops were nothing more than window dressing, adding it lacked any real ‘force and resilience’.
