Facebook has just got into the business of live streaming video broadcasts, although the new feature is only available to celebrities.
The social network has added the feature to ‘Facebook Mentions’, the app launched in July 2014 which actors, musicians and athletes use to engage with their fans.
The new feature, called ‘Live’, will only show up in your News Feed if a celebrity you follow decides to live stream an event. Fans will then be able to like, comment on and share the video while watching a broadcast.
The feature works very similar to Meerkat and Periscope for the celebrity users, who will be able to see how many viewers have tuned in.
According to reports, Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson, Serena Williams, Michael Buble and Martha Stewart will all live stream on Wednesday, to help promote the new feature.
Although the service is exclusive to celebrities for now, let’s face it, it’s probably only a matter of time until this feature becomes available to all Facebook users. At that point our timelines will be flooded with live broadcasts of people eating food and playing with their cats. Something to look forward to…
