Chris Evans is the latest celebrity to accuse Donald Trump of racism after the US president told four congresswomen of colour to ‘go back to the countries they originally came from’ – despite them all being American citizens.

The actor, best known for playing Captain America, publicly slammed the president for his ‘racist’ and ‘hateful’ comments via Twitter.

In an articulate tweet, Evans wrote:

This is racist, Biff.

The only thing worse than actually being hateful and racist, is casually wielding hate and racism to activate your base in an unrelenting, painfully transparent, and crushingly on-brand effort to soothe your only true devotion: feeding your insatiable ego.

Chris Evans, often vocal about injustices on Twitter, was widely praised for his comments and has since received over 270,000 likes on the post.

One person wrote in support:

While others are liking Evan’s actions to that of his popular character, Captain America:

Captain America on and off screen. Thank you for using to call out hate where it’s needed. It’s very appreciated by myself and many others.

Evans joins many public figures, from government officials to Hollywood actors, who condemn Trump’s comments which he posted via Twitter on Monday.

Mr. Trump originally tweeted that the ‘Progressive Democrat Congresswomen’ came from countries whose governments are a ‘total catastrophe’ and ‘inept’ and suggested they should go back to where they came from – a remark loaded with racial overtones.

Although Trump didn’t name the congresswomen, it is widely believed he was targeting Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ilhan Omar, Rashida Tlaib, and Ayanna Pressley, a group known as ‘The Squad’ that has been critical of Trump as well as current Democratic House leaders.

Many reports are deeming the statements are ‘racist’, because all women are American citizens and three of them were born in America, yet notably, they are all women of colour.

In the face of widespread criticism, Trump has doubled down on his comments and has even called for an apology to ‘the office of the president’.

Once again, taking to Twitter, the seemingly aggravated president accused the congresswomen of ‘foul language’:

When will the Radical Left Congresswomen apologize to our Country, the people of Israel and even to the Office of the President, for the foul language they have used, and the terrible things they have said. So many people are angry at them & their horrible & disgusting actions!

While taking questions from reporters at the ‘Made in America Product Showcase’ on July 15, reporters also asked Trump about his controversial remarks pointing out that people saw the tweet as racist.

Trump, however, isn’t concerned and believes many people agree with him.

It doesn’t concern me because many people agree with me. And all I’m saying — they want to leave, they can leave. Now, it doesn’t say, ‘Leave forever.’ It says, ‘Leave if you want.’
