The head of Indonesia’s drug law enforcement agency has decided that rather than guards, or walls or even rehab, crocodiles are what’s needed to deal with drug offenders.

National Narcotics Agency Chief General Budi Waseso wants to surround a proposed island prison for drug offenders with ‘as many crocodiles as we can’, according to the Jakarta Post.

The country’s Justice Ministry has not yet approved his bizarre proposal, but that hasn’t stopped Waseso from getting on with his plans, travelling to a breeding centre in Medan, North Sumatra as part of his search for ‘the most ferocious type of crocodile’.

When asked why he considered crocodiles to be the best choice for the job he replied:

They would be reliable guards. You can’t bribe crocodiles. You can’t convince them to let inmates escape.

Admittedly this is a tough theory to find holes in and could in fact be one of Waseso’s less brutal ideas for dealing with drug offenders – having repeatedly said dealers should be forced to consume all of their confiscated merchandise, forcing themselves to overdose.

“Let them overdose by their own drugs,” he said, adding that the narcotics agency was looking for ways to implement the punishment as a form of execution.

Who let him out?
