Residents who live close to one RSPB reserve near Selsey, in West Sussex, witnessed an amazing sight when fifty sharks were seen circling around a small pool in the area.
The sharks, who were up to 5 feet in length, gave the onlookers quite a shock given how rare it is to spot one in this country, let alone fifty all at once.
Two months ago, a couple of sharks were spotted at the reserve, but the unprecedented event of fifty being seen together at once has caused both members of the public and RSPB wardens to express their disbelief.
Now, before anyone gets worried that we have a Jaws-like situation on our hands, the RSPB were quick to point out that the sharks were not great whites, but smooth-hounds.
RSPB warden Peter Hughes claimed:
There were just theses huge fish everywhere in knee-deep water. We knew in time that Medmerry was going to be a great place for wildlife, but I don’t think anyone expected this.
According to Hughes, given how rare the phenomenon actually is, those looking for it to repeat itself might be waiting a while, so the YouTube footage is about as good as it’s going to get.
