This year’s Oscar nominations have just been released and film fans are in uproar as Wonder Woman didn’t receive a single nomination.
The nominations went pretty much as expected with Guillermo del Toro’s fantasy romance The Shape Of Water leading the field, receiving 13 nominations including Best Picture.
Christopher Nolan’s World War Two drama Dunkirk followed with eight nominations while Martin McDonagh’s Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri received seven.
However, one film was blatantly snubbed and it wasn’t Jordan Peele’s spectacular horror game-changer Get Out as expected.
Despite being both critically and commercially successful, the first ever female-led and female-directed comic book superhero movie Wonder Woman received not a single nomination. Not one!
Yes, admittedly, it’s not exactly a five-star spectacular film but many would argue it deserves to be nominated somewhere to celebrate what an achievement it was.

Wonder Woman wasn’t just a throwaway superhero blockbuster but it was a landmark in cinematic history and was perhaps the most talked about film last year.
Films should be nominated because they deserve to be and are the best in the category but the Oscars are always full of token nominations.
No matter what Meryl Streep does she always receives a Best Actress nod, likewise with Daniel Day-Lewis for Best Actor.
Streep and Day-Lewis could literally be in a film just painting a wall saying nothing and they’d both still receive nominations!
So where was Wonder Woman‘s nominations then, celebrating just how it broke the ceiling, completely obliterating it!
Patty Jenkins certainly deserved to be nominated in the Best Director category for her fantastic work and Gal Gadot was a possible candidate for Best Actress.
The real shock though is the lack of technical nominations which would have been the easiest way to at least acknowledge the importance of Wonder Woman.
Film fans have been taking to Twitter to share their thoughts on the snub, which will no doubt have left the cast and crew heartbroken.
Matt Price wrote:
I honestly can’t believe Baby Driver and Blade Runner 2049 are getting nominations but Wonder Woman is not! Appalling!
Connor Behrens saw the snub coming writing:
Wonder Woman, while a great film, was never going to get Oscar nominations.
It never had a chance and that’s ok. The film has received plenty of recognition from SAG, AFI and the Broadcast Film Critics Association.
A user known as Wonder Bira also shared his frustration tweeting:
I stopped watching The Oscars 10 years ago when I realised The Academy make choices based on what a select group of few people enjoy and not by what movies mean to audiences in general.
They think they know everything about movies. Wonder Woman isn’t there so they clearly don’t.
Christian Blauvelt hit the nail on the head writing:
Bummed by the complete lack of nods for Wonder Woman. A landmark in its genre, a comic-book movie that represented a moment. As much a cultural phenomenon/talking-point as any film this year.
I had a dispiriting conversation with a critic at the Toronto International Film Festival who was convinced Wonder Woman, which he disliked, was going to win Best Picture at the Oscars, not because of its quality but ‘simply because it’s about a superhero with a vagina’. Lot of talk about Wonder Woman like that, I’m afraid.
That kind of dude-bro resentment definitely hurt Wonder Woman‘s chances, which is such a shame.
