The suspect in custody for the Florida high school shooting has been identified as Nicholas Cruz.

The alleged shooter who has been detained by Broward police, has been named on WSVN-7 News as a former pupil at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.

According to the Miami Herald, teacher Jim Gard said:

We were told last year that he wasn’t allowed on campus with a backpack on him. There were problems with him last year threatening students, and I guess he was asked to leave campus.

The Broward County School District Superintendent, however, told reporters that he did not know of any concerns raised about the student.

“We received no warnings,” Superintendent Robert Runcie told reporters outside the school. “Potentially there could have been signs out there. But we didn’t have any warning or phone calls or threats that were made.”

Helicopter footage, which has been circulated around American news media, shows a man in a red shirt surrounded by police officers whilst in handcuffs with ABC News reporting the person in question is the gunman.

The Broward Sheriff’s Twitter account confirmed that the shooter has been placed in police custody:

Another student interviewed on the scene by WSVN-7 said the student had guns at home and talked about using them.

The suspect was reportedly detained and transported to Broward Health North in Pompano Beach.
