A Florida resident has been accused of a ‘backpack bomb plot’ in America.

23 year old Harlem Suarez, also known as Almlak Benitez, from Key West has been charged with ‘attempting to use a weapon of mass destruction’.

Prosecutors have claimed that he is a “self-professed adherent” of the Islamic State militant group.

Back in April, Suarez ended up on the FBI’s radar due to his extremist posts on Facebook.

He apparently bought the components to make an explosive, and apparently told a friends that he was planning to make a ‘timer bomb’.

The plan was to bury the explosive in a backpack at one of the public beaches in Key West, and then detonate it by mobile phone.

FBI Special Agent George Piro said:

There is no room for failure when it comes to investigating the potential use of a weapon of mass destruction.

The FBI and our local, state and federal partners work around the clock to prevent such catastrophic weapons from being used against our citizens.

The story is still unfolding.
