Floyd Mayweather and Conor Mcgregor have finally agreed to a fight on the 26th of August.
The long-awaited fight, between the undefeated welterweight and undisputed champion of the world, boxer Floyd Mayweather and reigning UFC Lightweight Champion Conor McGregor is finally happening.
After much hype, anticipation and bear-baiting – mostly from ‘The Notorious’ McGregor – the super-fight has been confirmed.
This will be ‘Money’ Mayweather’s first fight back in the ring after retiring undefeated at an incredible 49-0, when he beat Andre Berto back in September 12 2015. McGregor’s last fight in The Octagon was against Eddie Alvarez last year on November 12, he won via TKO in the second round, taking him to a fight record of 22-3.
The two have had a bitter back-and-forth over the years starting off in 2015 when Conan O’Brien asked McGregor if he’d ever fight Mayweather, he responded saying:
Duh! If you’re asking ‘Would I like to fight Floyd Mayweather?’, I mean who would not like to dance around the ring for $180 million? If we were to get it on, I would most certainly dismantle him also.
When rumours began to spark, Mayweather ‘admitted’ that it was he who started the exchange. The Irishman, in kind, responded with this:
Since then the two have had a war of words with McGregor saying that ‘Money’ was ‘getting old now’ and boasting that:
I have the size, I have the reach, I have the height, I have the youth. He needs me. I don’t need him.
The comments came after Floyd was rumoured to have only offered the Dubliner $50 million for the proposed fight. However, last year in November McGregor received his boxing licence in California, which further intensified rumours of a possible fight between the two warriors.
Last January Mayweather offered McGregor just $15 million for the fight, while it might seem a lot for us mere mortals, it’s considered peanuts for such a hotly anticipated fight.
‘Pretty Boy Floyd’ added that McGregor:
… hasn’t even made $10 million in an MMA bout. How can a guy talk about $20 million or $30 million if he’s never made $8 or $9 million?
He took it even further by posting this Twitter caption, trolling McGregor on their net worth comparison.
However that’s all over now, the contracts have been signed, the date is set, Floyd Mayweather versus Conor McGregor is finally happening.
This could potentially be the fight of the century (again). Let’s just hope it lives up to the hype and doesn’t become a ‘borefest’ like Mayweather vs Pacquiao back in 2015. The less said about that, the better.
