ReutersReports suggest that boxing superstar Floyd ‘Money’ Mayweather will be stripped of his WBO welterweight championship on Monday due to a lack of compliance.
The 38-year-old was awarded the 147lbs belt after he beat Manny Pacquaio in their highly anticipated showdown on May 2, however the World Boxing Organisation have now decided they want their belt back.
Apparently, the undefeated pound-for-pound king declined to pay the $200,000 (£125,000) sanctioning fee for the title by the deadline.
He also declined to vacate the WBA and WBC junior middleweight (160lbs) titles, which was necessary as boxers are not permitted to hold world championships in multiple weight classes.
ReutersMayweather initially expressed a desire to vacate his five world titles after his massive win over Pacqauio, in order to allow other boxers to compete for them (“I’m not greedy,” he sensationally claimed at the time).
He later had a change of heart, although not enough to actually pay the fee to keep the belt, apparently.
If Mayweather is stripped of the title next week, interim champion Timothy Bradley Jr. will be elevated to full champion following his win over Jessie Vargas by unanimous decision on June 27.
