Football legend Roberto Carlos has been sentenced to prison in Brazil.
The former Real Madrid left-back is now facing three months in jail for delaying child support payments of around £15,000 for two of his children to former partner, Barbara Thurler.
According to local media Carlos claimed ‘financial difficulties’ for his failure to pay the money and asked to pay the child support costs in instalments.
The Mirror reported Judge Mayane de Castro said Thurler had rejected a proposal by Carlos to pay the money in instalments.
Carlos, who retired from playing football in 2012, shot to fame in 1997 with his banana free-kick against France. He was best-known for his stint at Real Madrid between 1996 and 2007, and was a member of Brazil’s World Cup winning squad in 2002.
