In the new Marvel comic series, African-American superhero Sam Wilson/The Falcon has assumed the mantle of ‘Captain America’ and, boy, the charming team at FOX News really haven’t reacted well at all.
In the latest edition of the comic, Wilson battles the Sons of the Serpent, a supervillain group that hates all minorities and has clear echoes to the real-life Ku Klux Klan and other racist groups.
As art echoes life, Sons of the Serpent are currently particularly furious about migrants coming to the U.S. and are attempting to stop them from coming over and taking their jobs, etc. Ever the hero, Captain America takes them on at the U.S./Mexico border.
Naturally, Fox News’ Fox & Friends and other right wing media outlets took this to mean Captain America is targeting conservatives, because of course they did.
After branding a black man becoming Captain America a “PR stunt”, host Clayton Morris said:
He’s got a new odd enemy. Instead of going against Hydra and the typical Captain America villains, he’s going up against conservatives, that’s his new enemy.
As the segment became increasingly like a parody of Republican politics, co-host Tucker Carlson added his belief that Captain America should be fighting ISIS instead, before Morris actually mentioned Hitler. You couldn’t make it up…
Co-host Heather Childs added: “Keep politics out of comic books”, apparently unaware of how graphic novels (or any art form) has worked since the dawn of time.
Now, if only they’d keep politics out of FOX News…
