The French nuclear-powered aircraft carrier – the Charles De Gaulle – was also making final preparations before setting sail towards the Persia Gulf on Wednesday- which indicates the likelihood of heavier strikes to come.

The bombings on Sunday were the biggest that the French have carried out so far on Syria, with the French defence ministry spokesman describing it as a “massive” attack.

According to reports by the ministry the first target that was destroyed was a command post, where Isis were running a recruitment centre and their arms and munition depot. The second target to be destroyed was a “terrorist training camp”.

The operation was conducted in co-ordination with US forces and shortly after the raid, the French air force released footage of planes taking off for their bombing mission.

An anti-Isis activist group, Raqqa is Being Slaughtered Silently have said that no civilians were killed or injured in the French bombing raids, after speaking to contacts in local hospitals.

In a speech on Saturday French president Francois Hollande called Friday night’s attacks as “horrifying” and “sickening” and he vowed to wage a “merciless” fight against terrorism.
