Game Of Thrones author George RR Martin has revealed he will go ahead with a plot twist in the next book The Winds of Winter that can’t happen in the TV adaptation.

According to the Guardian, Martin said he’d decided to include the twist even though it involves a character that has been killed off in the show.

In an interview with IGN he said:

I have decided to do it. Will you know it? I don’t know. It is fairly obvious because it is something that involves a couple of characters, one of which is dead on the show, and not dead in the books.

In the IGN interview, Martin also said the fact the coming twist involved a dead character would not spoil anything, because there are about 15 characters who are dead on the show who are still alive in the books.

The show has deviated from the Song of Ice and Fire novels before, but Martin has reassured fans that the show won’t spoil the books:

Some of the ‘spoilers’ you may encounter in season six may not be spoilers at all because the show and the books have diverged, and will continue to do so.

Martin also admitted that in an ideal world he would’ve liked to have finished all seven books and have the story complete, but the show moves faster than him ‘partly because [he is] a slow writer’.

He said part of the reason The Winds of Winter has taken so long is because he has had ‘a lot of distractions in the last few years’ including the TV show itself, for which he wrote a few episodes in early seasons and still helps produce.

In reply to a fan who asked if he would be writing an episode for the TV show’s seventh season, Martin wrote on his blog:

I am not writing anything until I deliver The Winds of Winter.

Teleplays, screenplays, short stories, introductions, forewords, nothing. And I’ve dropped all my editing projects but Wild Cards.

Winter is Coming, and hopefully it’s not too far off!
