Warning: spoilers ahead from season 3 of Game of Thrones.
It’s nearly been three years since viewers saw Game of Thrones producers brutally kill of some our most beloved characters in the Red Wedding. And we’re still not over it.
But apparently, no one was more upset than writer Bryan Cogman. He’s been taking to Twitter lately to live-tweet his favourite episodes from the series, and on Monday, he decided to re-live the pain of making season 3’s ‘The Rains of Castamere’ – or as we all like to call it ‘The Red Wedding’.
He shared behind-the-scenes secrets as well as his gut-wrenching reactions to some of the worst scenes in episode 9 of season 3:
Aw, man, here we are. The final act. The wedding. Haven't watched this in awhile. #RainsofCastamere #GoT_BC_TopTen

We made it a point constructing the Season 2/3 outlines to pepper the story with the Lannister theme song so it would be recognizable 1/2

to at least SOME of the viewers when it was played here. 2/2

Now, this entire sequence was shot over the course of a week. And shot in sequence, more or less. Nutter insisted on this.

Aw, man, when I first read this bit btwn Robb/Talisa talking about baby Eddard, I thought "YOU SICK BASTARDS!"
— Bryan Cogman (@b_cogman) April 5, 2016
Another iconic shot. Michelle turning her head, hearing the 'Rains' theme. GAH.

Man… um… having trouble typing watching this again. #RainsofCastamere

This was a tough week, shooting this. No gallows humor. The whole crew loved Rich, Michelle, and Oona. It was truly tough.
— Bryan Cogman (@b_cogman) April 5, 2016
Ok, I have to stop typing and watch Michelle…
— Bryan Cogman (@b_cogman) April 5, 2016
oof. Okay. That's over. Fuck. #RainsofCastamere

And some other important bits of information:
This idea of Robb planning to attack the Lannister stronghold of Casterly Rock happened later in the writing process. As we read over the 1/2
— Bryan Cogman (@b_cogman) April 5, 2016
early scripts, it seemed obvious that Robb was marching to his death. There was a lot of foreboding, etc. For the screen adaptation 1/2

it was determined he needed a new mission driving him before being cut down. 2/2

As I've said before, splitting A Storm of Swords into two seasons was a challenge. The Red Wedding was always meant to close S3, but it

was trickier with Dany's storyline. So it was decided to devote S3 to Astapor and Yunkai and S4 to Meereen (using bits of Dance w/ Dragons)

And then some non-Red Wedding interesting facts:
Looks like Kit and Rose are 'out' as a couple now! I take full responsibility. #thecave
— Bryan Cogman (@b_cogman) April 5, 2016
Ah, season three. The season of Kit's broken ankle. We had to delay shooting most of his stuff til later in the season schedule.
— Bryan Cogman (@b_cogman) April 5, 2016
Poor @_richardmadden. He had more scenes standing over maps, plotting battle strategies, than any other actor save (perhaps) Stephen Dillane
