A midnight police raid on a former underground bunker has uncovered a giant cannabis farm worth £1 million.
RGHQ Chilmark, in Wiltshire, was converted to accommodate what local police have dubbed ‘one of the largest crops ever discovered’ in Britain, BBC reports.
The former Ministry of Defence bunker was built to protect local dignitaries and government officials in the event of a nuclear attack, and was described as ‘almost completely impenetrable’ by Wiltshire Police.
Police were forced to wait outside the bunker until three men exited. The authorities detained them and gained access through the nuclear blast doors using their keys.
Detective Inspector, Paul Franklin said:
There are approximately 20 rooms in the building, split over two floors, each 200ft long and 70ft wide. Almost every single room had been converted for the wholesale production of cannabis plants, and there was a large amount of evidence of previous crops. This was an enormous set-up.
Six men, all from Somerset, have been arrested under suspicion of cannabis production.
The three men found in the bunker were arrested on suspicion of cannabis production and the three men detained outside the bunker were also arrested on suspicion of human trafficking.
