If you hate spiders, you might want to look away now.
It turns out that house spiders have only gone and got bigger, thanks to the wet spring and warm summer. They’ve also become incredibly horny, so are looking for a nice warm place to get it on – and your house is looking pretty tempting.
So yeah, massive horny house spiders – some which grow as big as mice – are coming to a bedroom near you this month.
Dr Claire Rind, a reader in invertebrate neurobiology at Newcastle University, told Chronicle Live:
The males are on the hunt for females.
And after a wet spring and lovely summer there are more insects around, which provide food for the Giant House Spiders, which have grown quicker and bigger.
Some could have leg spans the size of a tiny mouse, though their bodies are actually quite small – I’ve some big spiders the size of a rat and their bodies are huge by comparison.
But I think the fact that they are very leggy is what people don’t like.
Apparently the best thing to do is clean your house, as the males sample the silk left behind by the females, so get that feather duster out!
