Let’s all take a moment to remember how terrible past iterations of King Kong and Godzilla movies have been. RIP Matthew Broderick’s career.
Keen not to let two monstrous franchises die a death, producers Warner Bros and Legendary have announced that they’re going to be smashing the two together in the finale of a new trilogy.
The first movie called Kong: Skull Island will begin production later this year, and will release March 2017. The second film is set to be a sequel to 2014s Godzilla and will be coming in 2018, cunningly named Godzilla 2. The third and final film will see the two behemoths facing off in Godzilla Vs Kong, some time in 2020.
Legendary’s CEO Thomas Tull said in a statement:
Audiences really responded to Godzilla. Today, I’m excited to reveal that film was only the beginning of an epic new entertainment universe. As a lifelong fan of these characters, I’ve always wanted to see the ultimate showdown, and today we’re pleased to be announcing that and more.
The new films are rumoured to feature other monsters such as Rodan, Mothra, and King Ghidorah. Kong: Skull Island will star Tom Hiddleston, Samuel L. Jackson and John C. Reilly.
