The fund now currently stands at just over £600,000 this morning, with the target now increased to £750,000.

Mrs Cox’s GoFundMe campaign is the biggest and fastest growing one ever in the UK, with over 20,000 people donating to the cause.

The 41-year-old MP for Batley & Spen in West Yorkshire was killed on Thursday after being attacked in the street with a gun and a knife, outside her constituency surgery near Leeds.

At one point during the attack, a 77-year-old man tried to intervene and wrestle the assailant to the ground, but he was also attacked and injured. He is currently in a stable condition in hospital.

A petition was set up calling for the man, Bernard Kenny, to be given the bravery honour the George Medal and garnered close to 300 supporters in less than a day.

Tommy Mair, the man accused of killing Jo, appeared in court yesterday and told them: “My name is death to traitors, freedom for Britain”.

He was charged with her murder, grievous bodily harm against Kenny, possession of a firearm with intent to commit an indictable offence and possession of a knife.

He was remanded in custody until his next appearance at the Old Bailey on Monday.
