RareGoldenEye 007 on the N64 was, and still is, an absolute classic – and it turns 20 years old today.
The first-person shooter GoldenEye was released on this very day back in 1997, and was closely based on the 1995 James Bond film. It caused a generation to believe they were Her Majesty’s finest secret agent – on screen at least.
If you’ve never had the privilege of playing GoldenEye, it features a single-player campaign where you take on the role of Bond as he fights to prevent a criminal syndicate from using a satellite weapon against London to cause a global financial meltdown. Epic!
RareAnd unlike the vast majority of the first-person shooter genre of its time you could play with your mates in the multiplayer mode, where up to four people could compete in deathmatch games, which was cool.
Who wouldn’t love running around Soviet weapons facilities trying to do their bezzies over in a round of ‘Slappers Only’?

The game was developed over two and a half years by an inexperienced team, and despite this it was highly acclaimed by the media, and sold over eight million copies worldwide, making it the third-best-selling Nintendo 64 game ever.
