Governor Rick Scott has made the grave statement during a press conference:

This is a deadly storm and our state has never seen anything like it.

Millions of Floridians will see major hurricane impacts with deadly storm surge and life-threatening winds.

Already, Hurricane Irma has claimed the lives of 22 people in the Caribbean, at the time of writing, and further fatalities are likely.

Governor Scott asked Florida residents to think about the extreme and potentially deadly weather before they make the decision not to evacuate:

The threat of deadly storm surge heading along the east, and the entire west coast of Florida has increased six to 12 feet, think about that.

Six to 12 feet — this will cover your house.

It flows in fast, very fast, then it flows out. You will not survive all this storm surge.
