Prince Harry and Meghan Markle – i.e. the nation’s sweethearts – have broken an Instagram record within hours of setting up their official account.

The new account reached a comfortable one million followers in less than six hours, making it the fastest account ever to do so, and therefore crowning them the official King and Queen of Instagram.

It was set up on Tuesday (April 2), and has now amassed more than 3.4 million followers – a number which is rapidly growing. And here I am struggling to get to 400 followers…

As per the Guinness World Records, the account @sussexroyal reached the one million milestone in a mere five hours and 45 minutes – a whole six hours faster than the previous record holder.

The account currently only has two posts, the first of which was posted shortly after the account’s creation and featured a monogram symbol with their names ‘the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’.

A further nine photos of the couple were shared within the post, showing Harry and Meghan enjoying various official visits around the world. The post is currently sitting at a healthy 1.1 million likes.

The caption read:

Welcome to our official Instagram; we look forward to sharing the work that drives us, the causes we support, important announcements, and the opportunity to shine a light on key issues. We thank you for your support, and welcome you to @sussexroyal. – Harry & Meghan

The second picture shows Harry visiting families at YMCA England & Wales ‘as a continuation of his dedicated work in the mental health space’.

As reported by the BBC, the previous one million record on the social media platform was held by Korean pop star Kang Daniel, who reached the milestone in 11 hours and 36 minutes in January.

Prior to that, Pope Francis held the record at 12 hours, after launching his Instagram account in 2016. One year prior to that, David Beckham’s account reached one million followers in 25 hours in 2015.

The news is even more exciting for fans of the couple, as former Suits actor Meghan deleted her own personal social media accounts last year before she married Harry.

This account is the first time the Duchess has appeared on social media since joining the Royal family, which is exciting seeing as though the couple are expecting their first baby this month.

You know what this means, don’t you? Expect royal baby photos in three, two, one…
