The (cyber) wall of HBO has been breached and now details of GOT season seven have been leaked online.
While not as damaging as the infamous four-episode leak of season five, which caused HBO to no longer give early screen copies to press outlets, the leaking of season seven scripts is no less ideal.
According to Wired, an ‘untold number’ of journalists received the same email claiming that ‘1.5 TB of HBO data just leaked!!!’.
The email, that was addressed ‘to all mankind’, promised to deliver ‘the greatest leak of space era’ and provided a link to details of an unreleased GoT episode as well as HBO’s other shows Ballers, Insecure, Room 104 and Barry. HBO chairman and CEO Richard Plepler confirmed that a leak at the successful network had taken place.
HBOIn an email to HBO staff he explained:
There has been a cyber incident directed at the company which has resulted in some stolen proprietary information, including some of our programming
The Hacker group, who have taken on the name ‘HBO is falling’ told journalists in an email they’re ‘lucky to be the first pioneers to witness and download the leak’. As well as promising to leak two full un-aired episodes of GoT they also released the personal details of HBO communications VP Jeff Cusson.
Furthermore the hacker who sent the email, and identifies himself as Mr Smith, claims to have ‘obtained alot [sic] about HBO’s staff and internal stuff’. However this claim is yet to be confirmed.
There doesn’t seem to be any motive so far behind the hack, but one theory could to be to do with the announcement of the controversial TV series Confederate, which will be headed up by GoT showrunners David Benioff and D. B. Weiss.
HBOThe upcoming show, which is still in the writing phase as we speak, imagines an alternate America where the Southern States of America won the American Civil War and slavery had not been abolished.
Since its announcement, there has been an outcry against it and during the airing of episode three of GoT in America the hashtag #NoConfederate was trending all over social media.
