Heartbreaking texts sent by students caught up in the Florida high school shooting have been revealed.
A shooter killed 17 and injured countless more in Wednesday’s, (February 14) atrocity.
The suspect, a 19-year-old former student, is in custody.
One student wrote to her parents via text:
If I don’t make it I love you and I appreciated everything you did for me.
Another student, 14, wrote of the situation:
Yeah there was a couple (shots) I heard too.
It’s not over we are on lockdown. No it’s not possible. You could get hurt.
James Harrison text his stepfather to say he was ‘really scared’ and how he couldn’t call him because he had to be silent:
Harrison told Fox News:
I just couldn’t believe it because there were so many shots that I heard and I was so scared and I was so anxious because I didn’t know what was going on.
I saw everybody else in my class texting their family members, so I just ended up picking up my phone just doing the exact same thing and trying to contact.
I contacted my stepfather, my mother and both of my brothers to try and see what they could do and try to get them to call the police to see what’s going on.
Cruz, who was recently expelled from the school and was enrolled in another school in the same district, was said to have ‘countless magazines’ and at least one AR-15-style semiautomatic rifle according to Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel, reports the Los Angeles Times.
Helicopter footage from the scene, which had been circulating around American media outlets, showed a man, believed to be Cruz, in a red shirt, surrounded by police officers while in handcuffs.
The Florida shooting is now the eighteenth to take place in a US school this year – the third deadliest in American history.
On January 23, two people were killed and another 15 were shot at Marshall County High School in Kansas.
