GettyHeath Ledger’s sisters have once again denied rumours that playing the deranged criminal mastermind The Joker in The Dark Knight killed him.
Ever since Ledger died in 2008 after finishing production on The Dark Knight rumours have persisted that his dark take on the iconic Batman villain left him somehow psychologically damaged and that the role eventually led to him taking his life.
However his sisters, Kate Ledger and Ashleigh Bell, have both insisted that the rumours surrounding their brother’s overdose aren’t justified and that he was happy with his life when he died, The Daily Beast reports.
Warner Bros.The two spoke about Heath during a Q&A at the Tribeca Film Festival following a screening of the new documentary I Am Heath Ledger.
They said:
He wasn’t depressed about The Joker. Honestly it was the absolute opposite. He had an amazing sense of humour, and I guess only his close family and friends really knew that. But he was having fun.
The Q&A marked one of the few times that the Ledgers have spoken about their brother’s passing and the family have given their permission to documentary filmmakers Derik Murray and Adrian Buitenhuis to show the world ‘what they didn’t know about him.’
I Am Heath Ledger has a limited theatrical release starting May 3.
