Henry Cavill has already shown he is more than capable of filling the shoes – or indeed the cape – of iconic movie characters.
As Superman/Clark Kent, Cavill proved a worthy successor to the Supermen who had soared across cinema screens before him.
This really is no easy feat when the late, great Christopher Reeve still looms large in the public imagination as the Superman.
And could it be the 35-year-old actor is about to take on another classic role, as the latest incarnation of 007? After rumours of Cavill leaving the Superman franchise continue to circulate, it could well be he is looking for a new challenge.
Cavill looks beyond suave in a suit and I can just picture him sipping a dry martini in a far-flung bar. Plus, his role as August Walker in Mission: Impossible – Fallout has been ideal training in the world of movie-land espionage.
According to a September 13 blind item from Hollywood insider site Crazy Days and Nights:
The producers of this long running franchise don’t care at all about the cloud swirling around the head of this foreign born former superhero. They want to cast him as their next replacement.
This news has been welcomed by many Bond buffs, who view Cavill as a very suitable successor to Daniel Craig, who will finally park his Aston Martin after 2019’s Bond 25.
This will be 50-year-old Craig’s fifth and final outing as the smooth talking, womanising MI6 agent, and he has previously said he ‘doesn’t give a f*ck’ who will play the next Bond.
Despite his openly mixed feelings towards the role, fans will certainly miss Craig. The sixth Bond brought some of the most thrilling moments of the franchise, and my personal favourite Bond film Skyfall.
Could Cavill bring something fresh and exciting to the series in his own right?
One person purred:
Henry Cavill has the – suaveness and humour of Roger Moore, the looks of Pierce Brosnan, the magnetism of Sean Connery, the toughness and compassion of Timothy Dalton, Daniel Craig and George Lazenby. He is Brittish. There will never be a better candidate for James Bond.
Another threatened:
If Henry Cavill doesn’t become the next James Bond I will riot.
Henry Cavill as Bond must happen. For the love of everything good, please let it happen @007

However, when it comes to such a beloved and long-established character, there is just no pleasing everyone.
Some fans have been left shaken and stirred by the news, and not in a refreshing way. Many have had much different Bonds in mind, including the likes of Tom Hiddleston, Cillian Murphy, Luke Evans and Idris Elba.
One person groaned:
I can’t support Henry Cavill for the next James Bond. Give me Cillian Murphy or Haley F*cking Atwell.
Another lamented:
Idris Elba is such an objectively better performer than Henry Cavill. I really would love to see Idris as Bond.
Tom Hardy has my vote.

If they actually pursue the suggested notion of James Bond being a manufactured identity passed along to a new agent every so often , this would work exceptionally well. Cavill would make an awesome Bond.
That said, I’d have loved to see Idris Elba in the role.— D.S.Ullery (@DSUllery) September 21, 2018
I'd totally take an Archer movie with Henry Cavill playing the part but, of course, H. Jon Benjamin doing the voice. And zero tech to smooth out the face while he talks–just dub right over him.
And lest it be unsaid: Idris Elba is Bond. Period. No other contenders.

Does Henry Cavill as Bond get your vote, or is there someone else you would rather see someone else don that famous tux?
