The best designs were chosen from a whopping 74 submissions, which varied from the traditional to the wildly imaginative. Let’s just say that the more grand and out there designs didn’t make the cut, for feasibility reasons more than anything else!
The final four designs for the bridge – which is set to link Nine Elms and Pimlico – have been designed by three firms, BuroHappold, Bystrup Architecture Design Engineering and Ove Arup & Partners. These bridges opt for spiral stairs and sweeping curves that would provide enough space for both cyclists and pedestrians at peak times.
Speaking to the Guardian about the project, Ravi Govindia, the leader of Wandsworth council, said:
We now have some very exciting and quite spectacular designs on the table. There is still a long way to go, but these teams have given us real hope that a solution can be found to the complex challenges involved in creating a new pedestrian and cycle link across this stretch of the river.
The winning design will be announced in October. Check out the four contenders below.
