The spat between director Hideo Kojima and publisher Konami has been well documented, but the film – named simply ‘Debriefing’ – focuses on the partnership between Kojima and his team.

In the documentary, Kojima states:

I always felt that every chapter I made would be the last, and nothing would follow. But suddenly, before I knew it, 28 years had passed!

Debriefing also follows Kojima as he visits the family of Sean Paul Gillespie, a fan of Metal Gear who sadly died after a long battle with cancer before the game was completed. Gillespie wrote to Kojima during the final stages of the games development, which spurred the Metal Gear team on to finish the game.

Kojima states:

The players are everything. Without them, nothing I do would matter. My mission is to exceed their expectations. It’s all that matters to me. Their energy has brought me to where I am today. In that sense, all the fans have created this game with me. So I wanted to express my thanks.

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain is out now on Playstation 4, Xbox One and PC.
